UMAA to meet with State Department Today Regarding Sheikh Nimr and Sectarianism in Middle East

(WASHINGTON DC – February 9, 2016) Today UMAA Advocacy Director Rahat Husain will meet with the State Department for a “Roundtable Discussion on Current Dynamics in the Middle East” regarding the fate of the recently executed Sheikh al-Nimr and to discuss rising sectarianism in the Middle East. At the round table will be a variety of other Muslim organizations from the Shia and Sunni communities in the United States.

The meeting will be lead by the State Department’s Special Representative to Muslim Communities, Shaarik Zafar. Mr. Zafar is responsible for driving Secretary Kerry’s engagement with Muslim communities around the world on issues of mutual interest and in support of shared goals.

Nimr Baqir al-Nimr, commonly referred to as Sheikh Nimr, was a Shia Muslim Sheikh in al-Awamiyah in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province whose arrest and execution by Saudi authorities caused international outcry by human rights groups.

Mr. Husain has been tracking the case of Sheikh Nimr for many years and has written two columns on the topic for the Washington Times:
